Q. What led you to become an Egg Donor?
I was introduced to egg donation after I watched my friend struggle to get pregnant for years and subsequently started looking for a donor. After losing touch for a while and reconnecting later, she informed me that she finished the process successfully and had a healthy baby. After putting a lot of thought into it, I started the application to see if I could help someone in a similar situation.
Q. Who was your largest support person(s) throughout your journey?
My largest support system was my best friend.
Q. What made you decide to be closed/semi-open/open with your Intended Parents?
I definitely wanted to keep the donation open or semi open because out of everything I read online regarding donor conceived kids, I kept coming across articles that discussed the ethical issues with donating and how it affects the child later in life. I found that the most of the negativity was not surrounding the process itself, but surrounding the lack of knowledge of who their biological mother was, and similar to a child who was adopted, they expressed a void that they had for not being aware of half of their identity. To completely eliminate that issue in a persons life, keeping it open or semi open relieves the pressure for the kid to have to embark on a mission to locate their biological mother later on down the line. They don’t feel they are kept in the dark about half their genes and they don’t feel lied to. They could find me any time they want on the registry and therefore might even be less curious and more accepting about it.
Q. Do you have advice for women who are interested in becoming an Egg Donor?
Advice for women going through this is definitely educate yourself on the process!!! Be as open as possible with your loved ones.
